Challenge: Creating systems that preserve the past and look forward to the future, while adhering to the budget, conserving energy and natural resources, and giving it flexibility to last for the next 100 years.
Solution: MKK creatively applied existing technology for this facility comprised of myriad special-use areas and housing sensitive artwork and artifacts requiring strict HVAC/humidity/lighting controls, while keeping the building ultra-energy efficient.
Challenge: UW had several laboratory concerns: pressurization issues caused unsafe room conditions and the existing HVAC system was energy inefficient (the labs were being served by unit ventilators using an antiquated chilled water system).
Solution: MKK retrofitted existing fume hoods with active pressure control devices and replaced the HVAC system with make-up air units utilizing direct/indirect evaporative cooling with heat recovery.
