Session Focused on LEED v4 Changes to Daylighting

Tom Hootman, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Provisional WELL AP will be a featured speaker at this year’s GREENBUILD 2015 International Conference and Expo. His session, “How LEED v4 Will Radically Change Daylighting” will focus on the most misunderstood and underutilized system to be integrated into a building. Tom, together with a professor of daylighting with expertise in glare, a daylighting consultant, and a software developer of cloud-based daylighting tools will share insights and provide practical advice in four visionary talks on how LEED v4 will change how daylighting is conceptualized and executed in buildings. Through graphics and animations generated from innovative simulation tools, presenters will discuss the strengths and limitations of the new metrics promoted in LEED v4, as well as explore issues such as the workplane, annual climate, dynamic blinds and the ‘goodness’ of quantification. Presenters will go beyond reciting formulas to help participants define these metrics in meaningful terms they can visualize, understand and use in their every-day practice.

Tom is the Performance + Design Innovation Lead at MKK Consulting Engineers, bringing over 20 years of high performance building experience to projects across geographies and markets. One of Tom’s specialties and passions is the design of net zero buildings and communities and he has worked on the design of several notable large-scale net zero projects including the Research Support Facility for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. His new book, “Net Zero Energy Design: A Guide for Commercial Architecture,” has provided Tom and opportunity to share many of the insights gained from his experience. Tom is an active leader in the building industry and sustainable design community with service to the USGBC Colorado Chapter, AIA Colorado COTE, Denver 2030 District, and the Living Building Challenge Front Range Colorado Collaborative. He is a passionate advocate for sustainability, a sought after speaker on a range of design topics and always seeks to inspire others while leading by example.

The session, part of the LEED and Leadership Track, will be Friday, November 20 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM.  For more information, or to register for GREENBUILD 2015, please visit the main conference website [here].
